Blog #1 - Pick a quote and analyze it

Pick one of these quotes and tell me what you think the speaker means by it and what the President is saying about democracy / government specifically.

1. Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind...War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige that the warrior does today. John F. Kennedy

2. No man is good enough to govern another man without that other's consent. Abraham Lincoln

3. Finishing second in the Olympics gets you silver. Finishing second in politics gets you oblivion. Richard Nixon

4. People ask the difference between a leader and a [political] boss. . . . The leader works in the open, and the boss in covert. The leader leads, and the boss drives. Teddy Roosevelt

5. Liberty has never come from the government. Liberty has always come from the subjects of it. The history of liberty is a history of resistance. Woodrow Wilson

6. No democracy can long survive which does not accept as fundamental to its very existence the recognition of the rights of minorities.

The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little. Franklin Roosevelt

I think that this quote is saying that everybody should always go for the gold. It’s saying that you shouldn’t settle for anything less than the best. In a way this is the way I try to live my life, I always try my hardest at everything. In addition, it’s saying that in politics, you don’t gain very much from not gaining the job of president. If you come in second, you don’t achieve anything, except a possible job at Vice President, but who wants to do that?
Overall, the job of presidency requires somebody to have an aggressive mentality, in other words, to go out and achieve the presidency. In other words, if you finish in second, you are forgotten over time, and if you win the job of president, you are remembered in history forever. Last but not least I think that this quote means to shoot for the stars, and try your best at everything.

i picked quote number two. i think abraham lincoln is saying its not easy to be a leader. even when you are a leader, you don't really have the authority to rule over some one else, without that person having a say in what is going to happen. You can not be a leader without listening to what the people have to say because if you don't listen to what they have to say, eventually the people will have reason to over throw you, because you won't be ruling for the people you'll only be ruling for your self. if you do listen to what the poeple have to say, then you'll be able to make people happy, and you'll become a good leader. but you also have to put in some of your own advice in order to make every thing work. i think maybe that is why abrham lincon was such a good president.

The first part of John Kennedy’s quote states that man must put an end to war before war puts an end to mankind. This is a brilliant quote because it may become very true in the future. Our civilization is known for destroying itself. We do not realize the amount of evil we must do in order to do good. Entire countries can be wiped out from warfare so putting an end to war may save us from war ending mankind. The second part says this is not possible because war will last forever or very distantly into the future. A conscientious objector refuses to bear arms according to moral values and if being a conscientious objector has the same reputation as a warrior does in present day, then that is when war will end. Once war is seen as annoying and stupid as protesting war itself, then mankind will come to its senses and put an end to war.

Finishing second in the Olympics gets you silver. Finishing second in politics gets you oblivion.

-Richard Nixon

Nixon’s quote reiterates something that is not always noticed. Everyone knows who Michael Phelps is. But does anyone REALLY know the name of the athletes he beat by a slim margin? Honestly, I don’t think many people could. Finishing second in politics is not always acknowledged in a similar way. Second place is a great accomplishment, but the recognition is not as much as someone who has won first place. People may not always be able remember who came CLOSE to winning, but they always remember who won the winner was. For example, after Rutherford B. Hayes won the presidency, Samuel J. Tilden disappeared from the public eye. Whether he should have won or not, Tilden did not win the presidency, but came close to it. Even though this is a great accomplishment, he has still, in some ways, been forgotten. Especially considering the way he did not go after the presidency in a “mud-slinging” manner; and wanted to win the presidency legally. This is an example of how finishing second gets you oblivion.

Abraham Lincoln

In the quote by Abraham Lincoln I think that he was trying to make a point that no person is better than someone or something else without someone else’s view. You need to get input about the subject matter seeing who the more powerful person in the situation that you are dealing with. One person can’t just say they are the best without other peoples input and views, and that one person has to be able to prove themselves. Meaning if someone is trying to make a point that they are the best, they would either need someone’s written consent or someone else’s input on what they think of that persons ideas. For example in an election for presidency people vote on who they feel would be best for our country. Whoever has more votes gained the power. Obviously that person is bigger and more ruling out of the two people. Lincoln was trying to make a point that you need others peoples knowledge and in an election you need to consent with the other candidate for views and ideas as well.

I think Abraham Lincoln wants to sat, that every person who lives in a country deserves the right kind of leader. No one wants to be pushed around or not know what’s going on. It is the duty of a president to be there for his people and act like everyone else would like it to.
Unfortunately, you can’t make it right for everyone. It never has happened and it never will happen. Everyone has different point of views and opinions. Besides, every human wants to do what he thinks is best and is in some ways egoistic. That’s why communism didn’t work. I think this quote is still very current. There are still dictators out there and many countries who are not satisfied with their type of government. It should be the people who elect their leader by majority. Lincoln did understand how a perfect leader should be for his people.

Teddy Roosevelt
Jamie Ray

In the quote by Teddy Roosevelt He is talking about the difference between being a leader and being a boss. He is saying the leader works in the open meaning that, the leader is always open to others ideas and is not enclosed to only what he thinks. A leader is one who is very powerful and does what he thinks is best for not only him but for the people. He tells people, or in Teddy Roosevelt’s position, tells the country what he is going to do before he does it and nothing is a secret. When he is talking about a boss being covert, he is referring to someone who is secretive. A boss does things behind doors that others don’t find out about until it happens and seems to make decisions on their own without any advice or input. He also points out that the leader leads and the boss drives’, meaning the leader tells where to go and leads them in the right direction, while the boss drives to where they are meant to be. In the end they work together in different ways.

The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little. Franklin Roosevelt

I believe Franklin Roosevelt is trying to say that our success as a country is based on if we made the poor richer and not on if we made the richer wealthier. FDR is stating what many presidents have stated in the recent past: That if our country sticks together we can make progress and can move forward. This is significant because at the time FDR was president the Great Depression was going on, and the wealthy were living without trouble as the poor were struggling to provide for their families. His quote represents the recent past as well, as the candidates for president in 2008 our fighting for the equivalent, as the lower class is lower than they were 8 years ago, and the middle class is becoming the lower class. Franklin Roosevelt tried to unify the country for the better through Democracy, as it was going through one of its hardest times.

1. Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind...War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige that the warrior does today. John F. Kennedy

What I think John F. Kennedy meant by this is that war will be the end of the world; things will escalate until mankind is wiped off the face of the Earth. The only way war will end is by stop holding warriors up high, and value people that refuse to take part in war. I believe he is correct in saying this, if nobody wants to fight, nobody will. With nuclear bombs and other weapons of mass destruction, war really could put an end to mankind. In the modern world, despite so many supporters of peace, there are people who still want to kill and fight for what they believe in. It will be a long, long time until we can achieve peace, especially because nations aren’t very willing to lie down their weapons and allow themselves to be vulnerable to attack. With the War on Terror, we are simply unable to do so any time soon.

When Franklin Roosevelt said that The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little. I think he meant that all presidents should focus on helping out the poor before focusing on making the wealthy, wealthier. I agree with his thinking. I believe that anyone with the power or ability to help someone in need. They should use that power to make the world a better place for someone or a group of people whose life is full of despair. I think that wealthy people should be less focused on making themselves richer and focus much more on helping less fortunate people. Some ways for wealth people to help less fortunate people are they can donate money to charities that give food, shelter or other supplies to those who need it most. Another way for wealthy people to give back to their community is to teach less fortunate people how to make money that way they will always have a source of income. I think the leader of our country, the president should encourage wealthy people and large companies to help out those that are less fortunate by giving people and companies more tax deductions. Another way the president could encourage anyone to help out less fortunate people is to lead by example. When people realize that, no matter who they are, they can make a positive impact on the lives of the people around them the world will be a better place.

In Abraham Lincolns quote “No man is good enough to govern another man without that other's consent.” What I feel Lincoln is saying is that no person has the right to order someone to do something, boss the around without their consent. How you give your consent is if u apply job a job and u get it then u gave your new boss your consent to order your to do stuff because it’s your job, order you to do stuff that applies to your job and nothing else. If your boss told you to do something non-related to your work that was no appropriate then that would be an abuse of power on your bosses hand. I fully agree with president Lincoln about how no man is enough to govern the other man without his/her consent, It means to me that no one my age can boss me around or tell me what to do. I’ll listen to an adult because that’s the right thing to do, and adult have powers and more responsibility then teenagers, so yeah I’ll listen to an adult cause they usually ask them to do something not demand or control me to do something, but out of common courtesy I’ll do what the adult wants me to do. I feel that no one should be given that power to control another human being without their consent, because that happened when slavery was in effect and that was just wrong and immoral.

I think that he means that if we don’t stop war it will never end and we will keep spending billions of dollars and invading other countries like Iraq. The only reason we are in Iraq is because of oil and john McCain said that he would keep the troops in Iraq for 100 years. The longer we are at war the higher the price of gas and food will cost and most people’s taxes will go up. All the money that we waist at war can be used for research in things like new energy resources and cleaner cars. Many republicans don’t care about the middle class that’s why most middle class people are having a hard time with the economy because all of the money is going to support the war in Iraq. The reason why John F. Kennedy’s quote talked about how we needed to put an end to war or it will never stop.

3. Finishing second in the Olympics gets you silver. Finishing second in politics gets you oblivion. Richard Nixon

When you finish second in politics it is like no one cares about you and you are forgotten. When you finish second in the Olympics people still admire what you have done.
When Al gore lost to George Bush in the 2000 presidential election we didn’t hear him in politics anymore only his tour for global warming. Also if you lose the election you have a slim chance of coming back and running again because current president might stay in office for eight years and you might be old or out of politics.
You get the silver in the Olympics people still cheer for you and adore you. Also when you go to the Olympics you go when you are young and fit, so you have a great chance to come back in four years and compete again. Politics is a harsh world and if you don’t win then you are forgotten. By: Matt Trogu

I think what Franklin Roosevelt meant by this is that the rich is getting everything, and the poor is getting nothing. This is saying that we need to pay more attention to the poor because if we don’t pay attention to them and leave them out to help themselves they will all die. The rich can show off there money but that doesn’t mean anything unless they actually give some money to the poor. A lot of poor people carry a ton of diseases and that get spread to everyone else. So if we helped them out and got them healthy then maybe there would be just a little less diseases.

I picked quote #2 . I believe that quote number two is stating that no man is good enough to govern another man with out the other mans approval or to give the same in mind. I believe this quote is true , because no man is good enough because with out the others consent it would make the governor jobs difficult. The job would be difficult because if the governor is trying to lead this person and the person is not approving of it then that s big problem. You can not get any where when u strongly disagree with your leader. To be a good leader you have to have the peoples ideas in mind , in you can combine your ideas and advice to compromise a situation that every one can agree on.
There for every one will be happier, then you’ll have the persons consent to govern them.

In Franklin Roosevelt’s quote he is trying to say that in order to become a stronger nation we need to make sure that everyone is somewhat equal. There shouldn’t be the extreme poor people and the extreme wealthy people. We should be giving to the poor to help them become comfortable. Since the wealthy already have so much they shouldn’t get more, when there are people out there with nothing. This is saying that in our government some leaders choose to lower taxes for the rich and increase them for the middle class and the poor. This does not make sense to make the people who have nothing pay more and the people who have everything pay less. I think that Roosevelt is trying to point out how divided the country is by social status and classism, and how that needs to be fixed in order to have a more successful nation.

The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little. Franklin Roosevelt
I choose this quote, number 6. This quote is said by President Franklin Roosevelt interpreting that instead of helping the wealthy and stable we need to help the needy and the struggling. When a president is elected to office such as the president, the point of his presidency is to progress and improve the United States of America. If the president does so, he has done his job right. I believe that Franklin Roosevelt was a great president and he gave words of wisdom.
At the end of Roosevelt’s presidency he progressed by making those who have too little, have enough to feel good about where they stand, but still give to those who have enough such as the rich. That is the true test of a president is to see if you progress the country forward as did President Franklin Roosevelt to the United States of America.

In this quote, John F. Kennedy is explaining that war will not end until the day and mankind ends it. War is the tactic that mankind results to when a conflict arises. War is not in any way beneficial for the world and the people who are forced to be involved. War affects not only the soldiers who fight, but also the families of those soldiers and the people who have a strong hate for war. John F. Kennedy is saying that if we do not stop going to war and stop fighting with one another, eventually war will end mankind because no one will be left. Everyone will kill and murder each other until no one is still here. All relationships that mankind has with one another will come to an end and nothing that is here today will remain. John F. Kennedy goes on to say that war will never diminish until the day that an average objector of war enjoys having the same status as a warrior is war does, until the objector stands up for what he believes in and proves that war only creates suffering and does not solve disputes.

When Abraham Lincoln said that no man is good enough to govern another man without that others consent, he was relating back to the act of slavery. When slavery was legal, white men “owned” their black slaves. Black people were ripped away from their family sold to another person to act as a plantation worker with no pay. When Lincoln said this quote, he means that without a person’s consent, they should not be forced do anything that they don’t want to do. After the civil War of 1861-1865 it was realized that slavery was morally wrong and not necessary. Even after blacks were freed from this ethically incorrect treatment, they were still discriminated against. Civil rights were formed and over time blacks and whites were finally able to live without segregation. Nowadays people are paid to work. All men and women are equal to each other no matter if they’re black, white, Asian, or any other type of race. We are all equal and deserve the same rights as any other that live on this earth.

When Richard Nixon said the difference between the Olympics and finishing in second, and finishing second in politics his main point is that you will be forgotten. He means that in the Olympics you can still be famous for finishing in second since you finished before 10-13 people. But in politics you run only against one other person. So if you lose you will be the one no one remembers or cares about, while you’re running mate will have all the fame and fortune. The only way you could get back on top if you waited another four years to run for president again, but that is a tough task to do. If you finish second in the Olympics you could be famous for the rest of your life. There are many presidents in the world that ran for presidency, but lost people won’t remember you. The only way people could possibly remember you is if it was a very close race and you maybe got cheated. For example the 2000 presidential election when George W. Bush won in a very controversial election over Al Gore, that will be remembered for ever. In which most people thought he should have lost. That is my interpretation of Richard Nixon’s quote.

(Quote by John F. Kennedy) “Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind” means that unless we make peace with our enemies, war will just gradually kill out the human race by destroying our land and our homes. “War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige that the warrior does today” means that in society today we have to look at the warrior and the peace make or pacifist. We can look at who is running for president and even who is more powerful today. The pacifist was always the more powerful one, but today the warrior is striving to reach the same reputation as the pacifist. If the warrior reaches the same reputation doesn’t mean that there will be more wars in the world it just means that the warriors have reached the reputation they wanted to reach and feel like they have more power over the pacifists.

John Kennedy’s quote about war, and how man should end war, before war puts an end to man, says a lot about his thoughts, and how a conflict should be handled. From the quote, it seems that Kennedy believed in handling conflicts with other nations (or conflicts within the country) with an agreement that will satisfy both sides, in order to reach a state of peace. It could also be referring to the cold war. At the time the cold war was at its peak, and at any time the two nations (Russia & U.S.) could have launched nuclear weapons. This would have opened a new chapter in history that we would know (if we had survived) as, World War 3. If nuclear weapons were used then there would be 100s of millions of people that would have died. Kennedy’s quote refers to these kinds of times, when man must think of the overall affect of their actions and time that it will punish mankind, rather than just at the moment of deciding for bloodshed to take place.

Richard Nixon said “finishing second in the Olympics gets you silver. Finishing second in politics get you oblivion.” Nixon is referring to, if you finish second in the Olympics you will get some recognized but not as much if you finish first. In politics, if you finish second, you will get little to none recognized but if you win you will get a lot of recognized and you will be known by the people. People always remember who wins but never who loses. For example, when Bush won over Gore in 2000, many people remembers the election and how bush won by one vote to win as president. Bush is recognized by a lot of people in negative and positive ways but they don’t really know what happened to Gore and his accomplishments.

In response to quote number 5:
The history of the human race always involves some struggle with freedom and power, whether it is with the Romans, the Victorian ages, and the politics of today. This quote explains that if you want liberty, you have to fight for it, resist, and protest. This isn’t because governments oppose freedom; they probably don’t know exactly what amount of freedoms to give the people of the country they run. If they make the laws too loose, then there are going to be people running around crazy (maybe). But, if the laws are a more strict, then people can disagree, protest against it, then eventually (hopefully) the government and the people will come to an agreement. In humanity’s past, the political figures (kings, ect.) didn’t particularly listen to the peoples disagreements with the strict rules. But that didn’t stop most people from fighting with their cause.

I picked Nixon’s quote because it probably describes Nixon’s attitude towards the electoral race better than anything. He was so determined to win that he had to literally stretch the rules in his favor in order to win. However, this is also a fairly ironic quote, seeing as Olympic athletes need to have the integrity which forbids them to cheat. The integrity Nixon needed, even though it may have cost him the presidency. His so called “dirty politics” are the main reason many people call him our worst president. And on top of all the cheating he allowed on his campaign, he has become a hypocrite, comparing himself to an athlete that would never cheat, and then flat out stealing the election from the fair playing democrat George s. McGovern. By itself, however, the quote is not entirely accurate, if you lose in politics, you do lose the position your running for, but you win the respect of being able to try out for it. Also, the amount of bounce back opportunities in politics is nothing to turn your head at. So this holds very little relevance about the subject, and further concludes that Nixon wasn’t right for the job.

I pick quote #1 what Jonny F. Kennedy saying is that if we don’t put an end to war that everyone will be killed. The war would put the end to mankind, mankind meaning the people. The only thing that war is doing is killing our people, the people that god make on this earth. If we keep having wars we will come to the last war quicker than u think because everyone have die who would be left to fight against . The wars need to stop now or the world is going to be gone. Everyone needs to find away to get along with each other. The world would be better if we helped each other out with thing we need and stuff like that. We have lost so many people in wars. It that need to stop as soon a possible. Wars is hurting us more whatever we are fight over. We just need peace!!!

The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little. Franklin Roosevelt.

I think that what Roosevelt is trying to say is that we need to work together and achieve more all together than just try and survive on one’s individual success. We all need to work on helping those who don’t have as much as some that do. Some people don’t even realize that they have much, but when they compare themselves to people who might be suffering, they may notice that they have a lot. So, as a country, we can’t be selfish and just think about ourselves, we need to think about those who might not have as much and give back to them. We don’t have to give them everything that we own, it might just be something small, but if we give something, you’d be surprised about how much they truly appreciate it. This country could only get stronger if we work together. If we fail to conquer this task, then who knows what will happen to us in the future.

Kiara Massey 3rd Hour
I think Abraham Lincoln is saying that no person is able to talk about or rule over another person without their permission. This means no one has the right to tell another person what to do or when to do something. It can also mean that no person can be the president or ruler of a place without having permission or the peoples consent. In order to be a good leader, you need your people to like you so that they will be happy and reelect you. Your people can also vote you out of office or dislike you. It also can cause violence, such as riots or protests. This can cause the economy to fall and decline. If you want a great economy then this is a good quote to go by.

I choose this quote because JFK is a hero to me and he was a inspiring word about war and humanity. John F. Kennedy meant by “mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end mankind…” He was saying in that quote that if we keep having war we will die at war and if we stop war that we will go on living our lives. War will be going on no matter what until the world in destroyed. There will never be peace in the world. The warrior/ Marine will still have the same object in war then everybody else. JFK is right until the world ends we will have war. There are these people that they are helping to try to stop war put when there Sunni and Shiites, US, Israeli and the palatines there will be no peace. The world will end when the super powers have a nuclear war.

Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind...War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige that the warrior does today. John F. Kennedy

Blog # 1
With Kennedy’s quote it seems to me that Kennedy does not really believe war solves anything. It seems like he is saying it just makes everything a bigger problem than it was before the war ever had started. The opening sentence in this quote is very meaningful and strong stated. But he says that “War will exist until that distant day” which is a very strong statement, leading to say war will exist until the very last day of earth, maybe it will never end, and the hate will never stop. This quote really stood out to me because of its strong wording and I think it has a great meaning to it. John Kennedy seems like he wants all the war and hate and violence to stop, put an end to it, and he accomplished letting people know he wanted the war to end in this little quote. But also, as he said “War will exist until that distant day”.

I think Lincoln was trying to prove a point when saying this quote. No one is better than anyone else. No one else’s opinions are better than someone else’s. This quote can be used in so many different situations. Even as simple as the 2008 elections. Obama and McCain are from two completely different sides of political basis. They do not get along. This will never end because people will always disagree on things. This does not mean that they are better than one another. People think things about other people based off of opinions. This goes along with the same thing with slavery. Everyone thought that just because someone’s skin color is different than theirs, they are better than them. Just because they don’t look and act the same as them. When people think they can govern somebody, bad things happen.

I think Abraham Lincoln said this quote during the time of slavery. It says that all men are equal and that no one person is better than another. This was extremely true back then and is still true today. If Abe was directing this quote towards the government I think that he was trying to say that it was hard to be in charge. You can’t order people around and it is a free country so people are able to do what they want. He wants to order them around but he can’t because no one man is better than any-other.

The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little. Franklin Roosevelt

I believe that Roosevelt was trying to address the poor and the inability for the rich to associate themselves to the poor, he says “the test of our progress” this meaning that once the people that have a lot start giving some to the people less fortunate we will have made progress. He is saying that a democracy isn’t a country that helps the rich get more money a democracy is a place that helps the poor live better, and that once we do this we will have passed the test and will be able to progress to bigger and better things eventually ending up as a nation at peace.

What John F. Kennedy means is that if we continue to have wars then mankind will be wiped from the earth. It doesn’t matter who wins the war, there will still be more to come. The only way to stop wars from happening is to stop sending soldiers to different areas and maybe make a compromise with the other countries. Other nations don’t want to stop sending soldiers because they will be easy to attack. People don’t want to fight, but they have to defend their country. Maybe one day war will end, but that day is long to come. If nobody wants to fight they don’t have to.

I picked quote number 2. No man is good enough to govern another man without that other's consent.
I think that this is a good quote because to me its stating that every person should be able to vote. For example, the presidential elections. Every person over the age of 18 gets to vote for the person they would like to run our country meaning everybody gets a chance to show their opinion. Also, I think Abraham Lincoln said this during the times he was fighting slavery. No man is good enough or better than the other. Everybody is equally the same or different. That is a very good thing to believe. When you are the president, you cant favor a specific group of people, you have to equally serve everybody in your country. Like when their was slavery, the presidents were for making this country taken over by white people. Making black people their servants. Now, the presidents are equal to everybody. This quote has a whole lot of meaning to it. That is my opinion.

“Finishing second in the Olympics gets you silver. Finishing second in politics gets you oblivion.” Richard Nixon.
This quote means that when you train and go to the Olympics you try to earn a medal (gold being the ultimate goal). They try as hard as they can and even if they end up with a silver medal you still have accomplishment and you are recognized for it. When you finish second in a political race you are the one who was not voted for and your ideas and suggestions are not used. The winner gets to go into to office and try to help the country be successful in all aspects of the government. So the second place winner is basically put into oblivion as Richard Nixon put it. And once you lose the election people don’t really think about you anymore they just want to see how the winner fairs in the world of politics. Also a Olympic athlete usually goes and tries making the Olympics again while a politic may not try running for office again. In politics finish second is oblivion and in sports second is a silver medal.

In the words of Woodrow Wilson, liberty has never been issued by the government. It has always been the citizens who have to work for it. The government can make laws that might try to put an end to injustice, but it’s the people who have to enforce it. Woodrow Wilson also says “The history of liberty is a history of resistance.” He is saying how all throughout history, liberty has been fought over, struggled for, and wanted by the people. It has never been an easy thing to achieve, and probably never will be. Just like the wide variety of people in this world, there’s a wide variety of views on liberty. There are racist people, anti-Semitics, and other extreme beliefs. These beliefs might contradict others, and that could cause an outbreak of aggression. The government is there to keep citizens in line, but it’s up to the citizens to keep justice.

The quote by JFK, explains how if people or countries do not stop having wars, and fighting over things that don not necessarily need to be fought over, mankind will be its own demise; we will kill ourselves. War has been a factor since the beginning of time. It causes disruption all over the world, rather it is economic or physical strain, and It has an effect everyone. Kennedy is saying that the only way to achieve a warless world is to reach a point of nirvana: a place or state characterized by freedom from or oblivion to pain, worry, and the external world. But nirvana is not reachable because it is impossible to make everyone in one nation happy. People will always disagree, and believe what they think is correct. Anyway, that’s all I think about this quote. Nothing left to say really.

“No man is good enough to govern another man without that other's consent.” I think that what Abraham Lincoln is trying to say is that being a leader is not only easy but does not give you the right to control people. in order to lead people you must hear and understand what they want, and need so that you can make the right decision, that will make the people happy. Even if you are a leader you must take decisions with everyone’s opinion. if a leader makes decisions without the people’s opinion that might anger them and lead them to start a revolution. a leader must be able to make good decisions that will not only be good for him but also for the public. Unfortunately it is hard for leaders to make the right decision and the one that makes the public happy. Abraham Lincoln understood that being a leader doesn’t give you the right to control people

Abraham Lincoln Quote Essay
I choose number two which is “No man is good enough to govern another man without that other's consent” by Abraham Lincoln because he has had so many great quotes and this is just another one of his many famous one’s. When I read this quote I almost immediately analyzed it saying that no one should work under another person with out permission. So you could relate that to slavery because all the African Americans worked under white slave owners with out there permission. This went on for many years until the end of the Civil War when the Union Soldiers beat the Confederate’s. He said these speeches with famous quotes before he was elected President and well he was President. All of his quotes have important morals you could learn and things the world now should not do like slavery. Hopefully his speech’s in which he said famous quotes made a change in society today.

It is true that if you get second in the Olympics or in an election people will not be able to recognize your name. Michael Phelps won eight gold metals and he is well known. There are still many silver winners in the Olympics that nobody knows the names of. People only remember people they here the names of many times like in the newspaper, on TV or on the radio. Reporters only want to talk about the most interesting topics going on in the world. Like in elections at first both candidates running for president are well know, but once there is a winner the runner up is soon forgotten. Like in the election of 1876 candidates Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel Tilden battled for office. Throughout the election newspapers were trying to help people decide who to vote for giving pros and cons. Soon as Hayes won the election though Tilden became oblivion he retired from politics and escaped from the public.

No man is good enough to govern another man without that other's consent. Abraham Lincoln
This is a very meaningful quote by Abraham Lincoln. This quote has many meanings, both in politics and regular life. In my opinion, in this context, the word governs means; “to talk about and provide their opinion”. In politics, this applies during campaign “smash ads”, when one candidate smashes the views of the other. In Abraham’s times, I’m sure that many people governed him (lied about him or his views) without his consent. He is also saying that a person who does this and still thinks he is an honorable man is wrong. This quote still applies in today’s times. Governing without consent can mean to talk behind someone’s back, i.e. Gossiping. I have seen this happen a lot, and it is a dishonest thing to do.

I think that in the quote that Abraham Lincoln wrote he talks about how he thinks the president cannot control all of the people unless the people want him to. I think that this is part of the reason they have you vote so you can choose what president you want to control the country successfully. I also believe that he is making a point about how any man that ran the country still would not be good enough for the country to run successfully. I think that he is saying this because there are so many things that they are unable to do. For example, in 2001 the president could not prevent the world trade center attacks. Even though he was a good president there are some things that cannot be prevented. I also feel that if nobody respects the president enough than he will not be successful with governing the country.

3. Finishing second in the Olympics gets you silver. Finishing second in politics gets you oblivion. Richard Nixon

Richard Nixon is trying to say that in politics if you don't win the election you simply don't mean much to everyone. Whether you're completely forgotten now or if you just aren't as important you would have been had you been elected you still aren't a big deal to those people. He was saying its not like the olympics because in the olympics if you get second you still get a huge honor and people will still remember you whenever they think of that olympics. But if you were to think of who ran against the former presidents many people wouldn't be able to answer who they all were. I think this is very right. I agree with this all the way. I could tell you who quite a few of the presidents were. However Al Gore is the only name that comes to mind when I think of who they ran against.

Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind...War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige that the warrior does today. John F. Kennedy
In this quote by John F. Kennedy he is talking about war, and how it is very damaging to mankind. He is saying that if mankind doesn’t figure out how to make peace and compromise then eventually war will kill all of mankind off. This quote could be very true for the future of mankind, we are always having disputes between each other and all it takes is one big controversy and we could all end up killing each other. In the second part of this quote I think he is trying to say that war will continue to go on until when a conscientious objector, someone who refuses to have anything to do with armed forces or war, comes around and solves all the problems between groups and countries. This results in ending all war.

I think John F. Kennedy is saying that we need to stop fighting in wars all around, not only in Iraq. All it is doing is making us fight ourselves. We put way too much energy, money, and lives on the line. If we let the war get to a certain point, it will eventually destroy all of mankind. I don’t think it should take that long for people to notice that everyone is struggling and dying. They need to notice that it should be stopped now.
The day that war will end is the day we have a strong, brave, and fearless leader. The leader has to be someone that wants to stop the war. They need to make the rest of us realize all the negativity that is going around. We should all be praising peace rather then trying to be victorious. War wont end for a while until we find this warrior.

The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.

-Franklin Roosevelt

I think that president Roosevelt was aware that the government was not aware of who the poor was not being helped enough. He felt that the rich get more and the poor don’t get anything and the same is applied in today’s society. This quote can also be why the high percentage of Americans who live in poverty have no help from the government and this can be prevented if the government took time out to fix the epidemic rather than worrying about the government in another country. I feel that the government could do a better job in helping Americans stable their lives and start to limit how much the rich get if their making so much in one household and distribute more to the homeless and struggling.

I think the quote that abraham lincoln said ment that one man cant rule others without approvel. If someone wants to govern someone they have to get the consent of others to do it. Like this is good so that no one can just go and rule someone and tell them what to do. This also shows that people will have to elect who they want to lead the country not just be appointed. Also I think thishas to do with equality so, not one race can rule another. That all men and women are equal and only people appointed to govern can govern other people.

"The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little. Franklin Roosevelt"
I think Franklin Roosevelt is trying to say that the only way that the human race will ever know if they have progressed, is if they provide for those who have less, and not so much for those who already have all of the necessary resources needed to live and then some. He is incorporating the values of charity and giving back. He knows that the world will not become a better place until the people realize that giving back to the poor will bring the people of the world together and keep those values that are important intact. He is also saying that we as a people need to work together to keep our values strong and supported. A more hidden message within this quote that I thought that Roosevelt was trying to express as that if we give, we will receive, not necessarily something we can hold touch or feel, but a sense of pride in the fact that you did something to help the world.

I think this quote means that the government needs to stop using the money that they have on improving things that are already good. They should help solve the problems in the country that are more important. I think it means that the people in control of our country have the power to help the less fortunate but they use it to help people who already have everything that they need. If they just ignore the problems of poverty and hunger in our country then the problem will just get bigger. The government should not charge more to the poor and less to the wealthy, we should be helping them out, so maybe in the future we will have less poor people in the world. If every rich person in the world would just give a little bit of what they have I’m sure it would help in a huge way.

I picked the quote..."No man is good enough to govern another man without that other's consent".
I really like this quote and i think everyone should live by it. When Abraham Lincoln said this I think he meant why should one be ruled by someone they don't agree with. I also think he's saying that everyone should vote because Nobody wants to be under the control of someone they think is wrong about things such as economy and things of that sort. I think that makes perfect sense. I think every person running for office should follow this to and try to please the people that they want to vote for them. People are only going to vote for someone with good morals and good ideas to better the contry and if a president or someone are the opposite they wont be elected. No one will make an effort to give thier vote to someone they dont feel is good for them which takes us back to the quote saying no man is good enough without the others consent, if you arent doing right you wont get the consent of others to govern them!

Richard Nixon once said “Finishing in second in the Olympics gets you silver but finishing second in politics gets you oblivion.” That means that in the Olympics you will get noticed if you get silver or bronze. But in politics you have to finish in first so that you will get noticed and win what you are running for. In politics there is no second there is only first and no second. So you have to work hard for what you believe to win. In the Olympics though you can get first, second and third to get noticed and have some part of pride but politics you can either try to finish in first or keep up what you are doing to keep pride. You can have pride and people can remember who you are. So to win you have to get the right people and thing to win and have enough money and experience to win. So in the end both can be good but finishing second in politics gets you no attention.

In Abraham Lincoln’s quote he talks about how no one man is good enough or can tell another man what to do without the other persons “permission.” To sum up the quote, Lincoln is saying no body has control over someone else’s life. Nobody knows what is best for another person and therefore cannot make them do what they don’t want. This is what democracy is all about. No one man had all power in democracy and therefore cannot make another man do what they want, unlike in a dictator ship where one man governs all. Democracy makes sure the power is balanced and that no one person has enough power to be able to make other men or women do what they want. During the time Lincoln was president; many white men had black slaves. These men were a great example of what Lincoln is speaking against. The white men tried and did make the black slaves do exactly what they wanted and governed their lives. They had no right to do this, and that is what Lincoln worked against.

I think that Abraham Lincoln is trying to show equality through this quote. That no one is better than anyone else, neither are their opinions, nor does someone have the right to overpower someone else’s thoughts and decisions. His quote backs up the idea of democracy: the citizens voting for presidents and political leaders that will make political decisions for them, to pick the best person to represent them. When the people vote, they are giving their consent to who they think will best represent them and their views. Once they are elected, their consent has been given to who will make these decisions for them. However since different people have different political views, and believe differently about who will “do the job right”, problems can occur after an election. His words oppose communism and every other type of government that does not allow the people of that country or society to have a say in who leads.

1. Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind...War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige that the warrior does today. John F. Kennedy

What I think that the president, John F. Kennedy is trying to say about democracy and the government is that the world needs to stop fighting in war with each other and in the because then nothing can progress. Then the world will just come into in end. The government isn’t helping by the rules they might have towards some people. Then those people might just give up and do anything like rob and kill other citizens. The world is full of violent. Then I think that John F. Kennedy starts to talk about God on the last sentence in his quote. That is what I think about what John F. Kennedy is saying about the government and democracy.

# 4. People ask the difference between a leader and a [political] boss. . . . The leader works in the open, and the boss in covert. The leader leads, and the boss drives. Teddy Roosevelt

In the #4 quote of Teddy Roosevelt he makes a good point about a leader and a boss. When he says that a leader works in open, he means that their not closed in with their choices/decisions they work together, asks for other a opinions, and looks out for their self and others. And I believe that when he was stating this he was pertaining to himself against some other political boss. Then after when he compares and says a boss in covert, which mean they’re not the type to ask for help or questions because they feel that they are in control over you. There not the kind to look out for you but only what’s best for their self. I also believe that Teddy said this quote when he was running for president to help the citizens make a decision to compare him to the other runner.

What I think Franklin Roosevelt was trying to say in this snip-it is, that we are not/should not be graded on how much we help people who already have hat they need but we help people that need the help the most. We should look at someone/something that is in need of dire help and focus on helping that cause, because4 thats the most important thing, u should be juged on.

No man is good enough to govern another man without that other's consent. By: Abraham Lincoln. I think this quote is talking about slavery. I think this because in slavery the white people ruled over the black people, they worked for the white man without their consent they were held to work for them with without pay or enough food. And if they didn’t work quickly enough they would get beaten. And that is true no one is good enough to be able to rule over someone else without their concent.

I picked quote number two. When Abraham Lincoln said No man is good enough to govern another man without that other's consent. I think when he said this he is saying no one has the power to be over rule over someone else. So with out there consent they shouldn’t be able to rule another person unless the person gives there permission to do so. When Lincoln says “no man is good enough to govern or rule another man he is saying no one has the right to order or boss some one around. That’s like for me to do things now days I have to have my parents consent for me to do it. When I’m 18 I don’t have to worry so much about getting there consent. My parents govern me now that I’m still a child. I think he’s just trying to display that all man are equal to one another even in politics.

A conscientious objector: “an individual who, on religious, moral or ethical grounds, refuses to participate as a combatant in war or, in some cases, to take any role that would support a combatant organization.” I think what Kennedy means is that war and violence won’t end unless men can have a stronger reputation for what they say and do than for literally being a warrior. The ability to physically be a warrior means nothing unless you are a mental one as well. He knows that violence among mankind will never solve any problems, short or long-term, and men are basically just wasting time; it’s a continuation of the world’s problems and they are inevitably killing themselves. War will destroy mankind and divide people, not bring them closer together. I think Kennedy is also saying that there needs to be more mental warriors and less violent men making decisions for people because war should never be the right decision under any circumstances. I think people feel like it will take care of problems quickly instead of doing what they should do by showing strength and working through their differences with intelligence and perseverance. War will exist until men can rely on their own morals to make better decisions.

"No man is good enough to govern another man without that other's consent" -Abraham Lincoln

This is the quote i chose becuase i believe it has a lot of meaning and power behind it. It touches many situations in life in which injustice has taken place and this line by Ab shows what should be right. This famous quote from Lincoln means that no man or person should be ruled or ordered what to do unless he has told that person or let him. This quote can be taken as a racism prevention statement or just a statement for the common man everywhere.

Quote number two really expresses the purpose of a democratic republic. Everyone should have a say in who is in charge of where they live and dictates laws and the economy. In our democratic republic, we elect our presidents, so as a country we always have a say in who is in charge. Many other countries are not so lucky, such as China and Vietnam, which are communist countries. They are not able t control who dictates them, so if they don not like the way something is done, they just have to deal. In the United States of America, we can make a difference. We are able to share our opinions and make changes to our society for the better. We are extremely luck for these rights and opportunities, for they show us that we can make a difference, and we can mold our country to become better and better and learn from our mistakes.

Quote number 7: Our modern society is very resourceful. It seems like every day there is something new invented. There’s always a new and improved version. We’ve progressed so much over the past few years its astounding. However it seems like human kind has progressed beyond the point where it is safe. It’s all fine and dandy that everyone can travel across the country in 5 days instead of five months people don’t stop to think of what that’s doing to the other inhabitants of our planet. Humans don’t seem to notice that as we expand and improve we are constently making the survival of other species harder and harder. The more emissions we put in the air, and the more trees we cut down, more species become endangered. Though we try to help by planting more trees and creating shelters for injured and endangered animals, nothing can quit undo what has been done to our planet.

2. No man is good enough to govern another man without that other's concent Abraham Lincoln.
I think that his quote means that a man can not judge a bool by its cover. It could also mean no man is better than another man and can not or should not say that they are better than the other without the other man saying that he/she is right and does not mind( which i doubt anyone will do). One more reason for this quorte could be saying that no one man can control any other man, like a president or governor or mayoror even an enslaved without being voted for or without that person or people's permission.
What i think about this quot is that it has several different meanings and that it make a lot of since because each of the meaning's all fit into the quote. they all mean the same thing but in different words so you could describe them all the same way. So that is what I think of this quote by Abraham Lincoln.

"No man is good enough to govern another man without that other's consent" Abraham Lincoln

I chose this quote becuase it is very significant and it will never be overlooked. Overall, this quote basically means that nobody has enough power over someone else who they believe is less than them or enough to govern what they do and order them around. This quote is meaningfull to a lot of people and it helps people see that everyone is equall and should be treated repectably.
